The Daiquiri Cocktail

Thanks to Applebees and TGI Fridays, this once sophisticated cocktail now conjures up images of excessively sweet frou-frou cocktails for people who can’t handle the flavor of even a little Rum. In fact, it’s hard to even say the word daiquiri without accidentally dropping the word “strawberry” before it. This is a tragedy.

The truth is that the original creation of the daiquiri is an exercise in simplicity and balance. It is simple because it only has three ingredients: Rum, lime juice, and simple syrup. It is balanced because the bite of the booze, the sourness of the lime, and the sweetness of the simple syrup are all in perfect harmony with each other. Like the three legs of a bar stool, if any of these elements are off kilter the whole thing will topple. But when these three elements are perfectly balanced, something clicks and we have ourselves a delicious drink (that has the added benefit of getting us tipsy).
